Photos show Woods at sex-rehab clinic

Jan. 21: After weeks out of the spotlight, cameras have caught up with Tiger Woods in Hattiesburg, Miss., at the Gentle Path clinic, a rehabilitation facility known for treating sex addicts. NBC’s Ron Mott reports.

>> reporter: hey, meredith, good morning. one of the planet's best-kept secrets, where in the world is tiger woods , might have been revealed. somehow, woods has managed to stay out of the public view ever since wrecking his suv thanksgiving weekend, but now it seems the paparazzi and its cameras may have caught up to him. bundled up in a hoodie with a cup in hand, a person who appears to be tiger woods walks the grounds of a respected sex addiction treatment center, the first purported sighting of the golf great captured on camera in nearly two months and published in "the national enquirer ." outside the facility wednesday afternoon, workers suddenly began erecting a tall, black screen , doubling the height of an existing wood fence.

>> reporter: nbc 's jackson, mississippi , affiliate reported late last week that woods was seeking treatment here following revelations of his extramarital affairs with numerous women. this week, an author and contributing writer for "the new york times" magazine, benoit denizet-lewis, has confirmed woods checked into the center.

>> my sources confirmed what other sources reported over the weekend, including the local nbc affiliate in mississippi , that tiger woods has checked himself into the pine grove treatment center.

>> reporter: the new photos appear to have been shot in rapid succession at what looks to be a residential facility called gentle path, part of the pine grove rehab clinic. himself a recovering sex addict , denizet-lewis chronicled the addiction in his book "america anonymous."

>> i don't know about tiger, but for most sex addicts, sex has ceased to be fun. sex is uninjoyable.

>> reporter: they say he's likely using it as a way to win back public sentiment.

>> this idea that people have that, you know, people sort of come into sex rehab to, you know, to sort of sit around and use it as sort of an excuse for their behavior is really so -- it's really way, way off.

>> reporter: meanwhile, no word on whether elin is joining her husband in therapy, as is often the case with sex addicts, experts say. she is reportedly living these days in an enormous rented mansion in orlando. this as the first alleged mistress to surface, rachel uchitel, recently canceled a highly publicized 35th birthday bash, her lawyer says, because of unwanted media attention. while we may never get official confirmation from tiger woods or his representatives about whether he's seeking treatment here or elsewhere, for that matter, we can tell you with certainty there has been a heavy police presence outside this facility and down the road at the sister clinic. meredith?
